I have just taken the sump of my 95 +8,because it was dripping a bit of oil (not suprising after grounding a few times)
I see that it was assembled with a sealant and no gasket
part of the leaking problem may have been that sealant was in the threads and on at least one stopped it seating properly..
Can I assemble it with just a gasket or should I use a sealant ?
If a sealant which should I be using ?

This is the sixty four million dollar question to which there is no absolute right answer. The shelves are full of gaskets in tubes and the choice seems endless. In the old days I used to go with Blue Hylomar and a paper gasket. That's what I would have used the last time I sumped a V8 engine. Nowadays sump gaskets seem more sophisticated, being either an O ring in a groove or a metal/rubber composite. Even so, on the Ford V6 it's recommended that you use a sealer at least where the front cover attaches to the block.
So all I can say is do a bit of research - go for one which stays flexible, is oil and temperature tolerant and bear in mind that one day you might want to take it off again!

Sealant as well belt and braces.

Blue Hylomar and a gasket, make sure spotlessly clean and grease free before sticking up, don't over do the sealant you want and even coating. Get a metal straight edge and match sure the sump face that go to the block up are flat and not distorted.

Is the sump tin, if so you might do well to counter peen the holes a bit. Sorry I don't know much about the plus 8---

Mild steel pressing on + 8. Would use cork gasket and blue hylomer.

Best gasket compound I've found is Wellseal

Knocks Hylomar and Hermetite into a cocked hat.

I managed to buy a tin of it for a very reasonable price. Shan't ever need to buy any more in this lifetime...

Our Suzuki Jimny Jeep, 2007 had a dripping sump last year due to salt corroding the base of the sump.

Suzuki say use a sealant. There is no gasket for sale.

I used blue hylomar and it leaked and I spent say 2 hours removing the old mastic type sealant. It was clean!!!!!!!!!!

So again removed the sump and used the Suzuki stuff at £50 a tube and that was Febuary 2013 and it is still oil tight.

To go off topic.

In 2002 my three year old Golf GTI had the same sump corrosion. It used a gasket and there were no leaking problems when replaced not using any sealant. The whole inside the engine was black and the black stuff was say 5mm deep all round including in the sump.

Wind forward 2013. Using either semi synthetic Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 for the first three changes and Magnatec 5W/30 synthetic for the next three changes.

The whole inside the engine at 53,000 miles and the sump was clean as a whistle. The latest oils have great cleaning properties and the engine only had a sight oil coloured coat on it.

I would use a specilised non setting thick sealant like the Suzuki sealant.

I will try and find a spec for you.

Chris Just a thought. check you have not hit the drain plug. Ripped mine out once on the drive gate holder. Had it brazed back.

+1 for Wellseal and gasket. Apply with a roller for an even film (I use a thick sheet of glass as a working surface), clean off with white spirit. Good on cork or paper gaskets. Great stuff but stinks a bit!
