Thats the way I have to do my mohair hood (it shrank slightly after reproofing). Usually with a pair of pliers to help fasten the last few turnbuckles.
The correct way is to attach the rear, pull over erect hoodsticks then fasten lift-a-dots to windscreen. However, do be careful, you can crack the windscreen.
I recommend some of John Taylor's over-centre hood swivels as Steve suggests. These allow the hoodsticks to sit a little lower while fastening the hood, then can be swung around to tension the hood. Can't be fitted to cars with bench seats (like my '76) though.

Assuming you have a the original hood design. It is like erecting a rig tent  1. Erect the hood bars 2. Clip the hood to the windscreen first. 3. Then attach to the rear. If this is impossible/hard, then it maybe because the hood is very tight against the hood bars. If this is the case I suggest you invest in a pair of Hood Swivels as advertised in Miscellany. make sure you fasten the centre lift the dot first on the windscreen - reduces the chance of breaking windscreen. if the hood hasnt been used for a while it can be tight. try taking it indoors to warm up for a bit!

Managed to fit the hood last night without even having to take it indoors. A case of perseverance and not being a whimp.
(Iv'e been driving citroens too long and have no strength left)
BTW its much more fun to drive than I was led to believe. At least my wife will now also accompany me when it rains now!

If this is the case I suggest you invest in a pair of Hood Swivels as advertised in Miscellany.
One thing I've noticed - the Swivels cause bruising to the bum when we aged struggle to get out the car!
