So long as you stick to the correct font type & size and don't illegally tweak the spacing you can have a minimum 10mm from the letters to the plate edge - this will govern your minimum size  I have reduced the size of my front number plate, as long as I have a minimum of 11mm from the letters to the plate edge I should be ok.

Yes Craig, you can reduce overall size like yours is, I mistakenly put 10mm but should be 11mm 'officially', although I doubt they would measure it that accurately at the roadside if stopped to + or - 1mm

Yes Craig, you can reduce overall size like yours is, I mistakenly put 10mm but should be 11mm 'officially', although I doubt they would measure it that accurately at the roadside if stopped to + or - 1mm I have "German Style" pressed metal plates, in the modern colours. As my Registration is only 6 characters, including the space, the plates are shorter.  The producer assured me that are 100% legal as the gap between each letter/number and the black edge of the plate is exactly as specified, as is the font. top and bottom. When I called them told me that if I had a single Letter-Number registration, for example "A1" the number plate could be very small!!

I am wanting a shorter pressed metal plate for our VW surf bus.

I think there is confusion here between meeting the British standards which require makers name etc and what is required by law which is the format as specified by the DVLA

Peter, pressed metal plates are not legal. Your plate does not have the BSAU number nor the makers name / or post code. Your supplier knows well enough it's not legal otherwise his name or postcode would be on it. Same goes for Craig no BSAU number or makers name / postcode.
They are and they do have all the info on them Peter got them from the same company as mine

I think there is confusion here between meeting the British standards which require makers name etc and what is required by law which is the format as specified by the DVLA I think the problem is when some people and some websites refer to ‘pressed metal plates’ they are using it as a generic term for the old pressed metal plates not these new plates which comply in every way including the reflectivity which the old ones didn’t Mine and Peters metal plates are legal, comply in every way (I’ve downloaded the DVLA document) they have the makers address and BS number clearly on the plate and have the required reflectivity on the rear The spacing and letter type is perfect And they look cool

I can't see any address and BS number on Peter's plate .
I do like the look of them though , I had a black and silver 6 1/2 by 7 inch on my M3W , got caught speeding twice , no mention of the plate .
Also had a long chat with a couple of traffic cops while filling with petrol , they didn't seem bothered ...
