See my post above Nick. The grease gun head needs to lock onto the nipple. If it doesn't it needs adjusting or you need a new head.
My new Wanner grease gun had this issue. Since changing the head no issues. Once locked on grease can be squirted in at almost any angle without it leaking out of the sides. Sometimes a little difficult to break head off nipple after greasing, but moving it beyond normal limit will work.

I’d say the gun end is too big and not going all the way on. Unscrew the nipple a bit and try again. Don’t forget to do it back up again.

A flexible hose between the head and body of the gun helps a lot at times like these. Since doing this I have cut down the number of issues a lot.
Also try to slide the head on from the side rather than a full frontal attack, this will help preserve its 3 "claws" which latch onto the nipple.

I've always had a problem clamping on to nipples

I bought one of these and found it to be totally useless. The coupler supplied with my grease gun is far more effective once installed on a flexible pipe.
