Me, definitely. The Landy and the Morgan are staying, neither of them owe us anything. But in a few years time, once you can pick up something like an 120Ah i3 or a Tesla Model 3 for around £15k, I'll happily make the move and get rid of the Fiat 500. It's only purchase cost that's stopping me from going for it now.

I am just waiting for the noise generating sound byte monkeys of the chattering press to run the first articles on charger rage and the lack of consideration at charging stations. Good etiquette and entitlement will collide. Ratio of broken chargers and diversity of accounts, blah blah blah....lets see who is the first to sound off. Chelsea Tractor club with their Range Rover P400e or Leafy Lefty with equality issues.

Electric would make sense for the "shopping trolly" as the maximum it ever does is about 200 km and the usual is under 50km in a day. It does have to be saithat concerns over battery life in the smaller BEVs is a bit of a worry. I tend to keep cars for 10 years and I am not sure how many BEV battery packs are really going to last that long. Perhaps some of the deals where you pay €x up front with the option to return (or keep) the car at the end of a period are worth considering. The residual at the end of such a period is often set to make it attractive to hand the car back and get another new one at the end of the period.

For the Morgan or the Jaguar to be replaced by electric at this moment would not have any sense as they are often used for trips of up to 500 km in a day. FCEV would have sense once sufficient hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is available.

Regarding the critism of the cost and inefficiency of producing hydrogen one only has to look at the huge amount of renewable or green energy resources that are on standby or unused in periods of low demand. Consider how often you see wind farms with few of the turbines actually turning. I would suggest that hydrogen is then a viable method of storing this potential energy.

A thought process I am going through at the moment. We have 3 cars, but two of them the Plus 8 and the Land Rover have been in storage now for 5 months because of building work. There has been no loss of convenience, but perhaps a loss of joy. The Land Rover is the most sensible car we have for the Island, but has to be kept outside so has a continuous time-consuming battle to keep rust at bay. Half toying with the idea of a second hand Zoe, but to swap the Land Rover for a Zoe does seem to go against the grain. Also our mileage is so trivial that keeping the battery topped up from losses may well cost more than the petrol - Cost not being the only issue of course.

No, I'm hoping to hang on until the only sensible solution of hydrogen comes along, maybe a little optimistic but I live in hope.

Whether we like it or not public attitudes will evolve in line with the times.

Engineering will likewise evolve as it has done since the age of steam, I remember the steam trains lined up at Corkerhill, good for nothing other than scrap when diesels took over... As kids we used to roam everywhere, we found an old 350 AJS under a bit of a tarpaulin lying up against the side of house, the owner said we could have it for a bottle of IRN-BRU and 10 Capstan... Strange but true Tim. We scurried off home, purloined a few bob... and between the four of us we became the proud owners of a m/cycle.

Technological advance...? What is a 286 computer worth today, and what were dimensions of the amount of hardware it replaced when it was the latest bit of kit ? Mobile phones with more computing power than the first man on the moon had available to get there and back, kit that once cost a fortune worth less than nothing now, in fact it can be a burden to get rid of it...?

T`was not until the seventies that BANGERS became Classics and the industry gathered speed, from then on fuelled by the Baby Boomer generation`s discovery of disposable income which seemed to increase around the birth of easy money at the beginning of the eighties....Home ownership increase perhaps via council house purchases, buying shares, classic cars, two or more holidays abroad, things few folk had ever dreamed of but a few years before, amazing the way our sense of values and expectations can alter..?

Industry can not afford to fail...??? Where do you live..? Where I live very large industries have disappeared... Ship building, coal mining steel works, Car and truck manufacturing plants shut down , and much more. Rejuvenation has been tried, in more recent times huge factory built for a Chinese TV tube manufacturer using govt money in the hope of providing employment, I think it never produced a tube, as by the time it was built LCD had taken over..! Yeah things can change... and fast too, faster than govt planning on occasion...?

I sure hope that the disruption so many have and are voting for works out well in time for the common good.

I apologise if that which I type seems negative or contradicts your personal beliefs or interests, though I in no way feel negative... quite the opposite in fact. The MMC, yeah well it seems obvious they will be continue to be supported by the faithful producing scooters for the ever ageing baby boomers with a cowl, rad and all important winged badge... (-:

EV or not...? Currently marching time, should replace my old 4wd turbo diesel truck as I am finished with heavy lifting, but stretching another year out of the old thing by which time, I hope to see a clearer way forward, before thinking to replace it or just drop down to two cars.. hmm..?

Interesting that the thread has turned to electric cars.
I am amazed that a company has not produced an electric hybrid kit for classic cars.
Classicelectriccars do conversions using tesla batteries and an electric motor, but it is certainly not an accepted and wide spread option. It would give you extra low down torque and can be used in cities.
35hp is all that's needed as that got my old Series 2 4/4 around. Start up your 4, 6 or 8 out of town and give a nice big green smile.
When you see the value of the cars in Classic and Sports car magazine we are talking billions of pounds worth of potential obsolescence. Or perhaps they are all just for driving around your private estate and for the heated glass showroom.

Most of the stuff that sells for really big money you will never see on the road. Some may get dragged out for a track display lap from time to time but the vast majority will just sit there as a collectors investment.
