The roads in 2040 Britain will look like Cuba in the 1990s if everyone tries to keep their old cars going.
Ferment potatoes I say.

Hamwich... Quite a large portion of our fuel consumption is refined abroad and imported so stopping petrol production won't liberate as much electricity as it might.... The transport sector uses about 60 Mtoe..... Electricity about 20 Mtoe.... Assuming that 'well to wheel' efficiency of EV is twice that of ICE we will still have to find about 1.5 times as much electricity on top of what we already use to fill the gap.... We need to be producing two and a half times as much electricity as we do now by 2050 (being generous and assuming the last cohort of ICE cars in 2035 is still the majority and lasts for 15 years) .... I just can't see any way capacity can be built that quickly (and in the face of mature existing plant closing in the mean time)..... Logistical nightmare for someone!! :-)

K

PS.. Found this list.... Can anyone see us building 1.5 times this infrastructure in 15 to 30 years while the older plant continues to close due to old age??

There is a working assumption that cars will be used in the same way as now, but very sadly I believe that personal car ownership will move towards being the preserve of the well off.

Looking at how our whole social and economic geography is built round the car ... Who lives in a terrace within whistle range of the factory gate and doesn't get most of what they need from a retail centre out beyond sensible walking distance?? ..... Realignment of our whole housing/work/retail infrastructure UK wide would be more of a job than the power stations.... There will no doubt be an increasing 'uberisation' of transport, but beyond the urban centres personal transport will be with us for a while yet

Some people would say I don't even live a reasonable walking distance from my own letter box.

I used to live about a mile and a half from the letter box but I have been on properties where the mail had to come in by plane smile

For a start we can use the huge amount of electricity that's currently swallowed up refining petrol. It takes around 8KWh of electricity to produce and transport a gallon of petrol, which will take an ICE car around say 40 miles. A Tesla Model 3 for example will go for 30 miles on the same amount of electricity so we're already ¾ of the way there just by not producing so much petrol.

I crunch the numbers annually on my i3, and over the last year it's done the equivalent of 136.9 mpg & I don't drive it like your average EV eco flag

Where we live our garages are in a condominium The power for the doors etc is billed equally to all garage owners, no provision has been made to measure or meter the amount of electricity consumed by someone who has an electric vehicle. In fact there is someone who has two mobility scooters. So far no one has suggested he should pay extra however I am sure his consumption is not so great, someone who does a lot of Ks with a BEV would be a different story if it is charged up every night.
