Having said that, most of the time I never use it - fuel consumption over the past year has been about 2 litres (in 9000 miles) BUT it is the get out of jail card when the battery is depleted and with that you're quite able to run the battery to its last few miles of range without worry of becoming stranded.
John
Doesn't fuel go off? It certainly does in my lawn mower if I don't use it for a couple of months. I would think you needed to use a tank every couple of months at least just to make sure the petrol is not too old. It uses a completely sealed tank so presumably no evaporation = no change to the fuel. There is a venting / purging process that is initiated before you can open the filler cap. John

and where do they go at the end of life . End of life EV batteries don't get chucked away. They are re-purposed into storage arrays for virtual power plants/demand response systems for renewable generation sources. There is enormous demand for these, and the fact that vehicle batteries are generally lasting much longer than the original estimates predicted mean that the value is really quite high. That's what these installations are full of: ![[Linked Image]](https://www.electrive.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/pivot-power-batteriespeicher-battery-storage-oxford-symbolbild-min-768x384.png) Just curious - where do they go after they have insufficient capacity for such use? BTW I'm with you on the i3 Rex. BMW apparently dropped it as customers had problems with the ICE plant - mainly due to lack of use. Have a feeling I read that here somewhere...

I don't know, the Burton plant (which is the only one I know anything about) is still running with the original batteries. There's no UK recycling plant yet so I would think we'd have to get them recycled in a European plant until one is built.

Hi Graham I don't know where this battery farm is located. We have one a few miles from where i live. It has a capacity of 40 Mw. Together with a bunch of local "engineering" types we visited. We were told that the deal on the batteries from the supplier was "for life" ie whenever a battery fails the supplier provides a replacement FOC. Nothing was said about SH batteries, but the "for life" suggests they might be SH because there will be a continuous supply from EV's. ....Very interesting i would say?

Shame we can't use Nickel Iron (NiFe) batteries developed by Thomas Edison 120 years ago and ironically used in very early US electric cars. Non polluting, typical life is a minimum of forty years with some known to be still performing after over a hundred as in this pre WW1 Detroit Electric. Could be a weight issue of course ![[Linked Image]](https://www.nickel-iron-battery.com/Detroit-1912.jpg) Click for more info.

There has to be an end point at some time. Can't duck the issue forever. It sounds a bit head in sand to me.

Thanks Ken. I'd have enjoyed a visit to such a place. Eventually, someone in the industry will advise where the expired batteries go...

I have a fair few hemp shirts Do you smoke 'em or are you just doing penance? Actually they are really soft, almost like a fine flannel.
