Thanks to Planenut for your answer, I’ll give a try. And yes, fill up and zero the trip is anyway what I was doing since day one 😇. And for me, being French, the usual result was 300km for 23/25 litres of fuel. Doesn’t it make senses forever body ? And what the real capacity of the fuel tank ? I’ve read anything from 30 to 45 litres !

23/25 litres per 300km is about right and the tank is 40 litres.

On a Euro Tour of some sort, I generally use the 250 miles and Fill approach, although as Chris says, 200 is safer if you've been making good 'progress' on that tank of gas. A friend with a 5-speeder had to make a dash for Calais from deep in Belgium and had a gallon of juice strapped to the luggage rack just in case, as he thought he'd try to get to Calais in one hit. He cruised the Autoroute at about 4500rpm (85mph I guess) and ran dry at 295 miles. Just for reference.....!

Was your friends speedo calibrated or was it the normal 7% over reading R1NGA? If it was uncalibrated you can knock about 20 miles off the range, about 275 real miles, as against 295 M3W optimistic miles. I would be seriously looking for a refill at 250 (real) miles (my speedo is calibrated). It may come in handy if you are planning a long trip with minimal refuel stops.

Undoubtedly uncalibrated Ian, it was a very early car which he bought from Scotland (VM08 GAN) and we did a lot of miles together in 2013.

The OP has an erratic trip meter so that method is also unreliable. He does not say if the odometer reading also fluctuates, if not noting the reading on fill would give a proper distance though inconvenient.

Thank you TimG for drifting us back! The trip ticks over accurately from its start-up reading; but that reading may be some way out from the previous shut-down figure. So I do not know which of the two is correct. Do I fill up in 40 miles or 70? It's that uncertainty that makes me anxious to fix it. Previous threads reporting this problem did not seem to reach a conclusion.

Take a note of the trip & odometer on switch off & again on start up. If odometer is consistent use that until you can get a fix for the trip meter. If still in warranty perhaps a replacement speedo would be the answer if its an internal electronic fault.

M3W55, did you ever get a resolution on your trip meter issue? I've got the same thing and it appears to be the same situation with the odometer. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I am afraid that I cannot remember whether it fixed itself. I have not had the vehicle for some time.
