At least give him a Universal gaiter to fit, otherwise he'll charge you £50 or so for one of the special MMC ones.

Thought I'd tackle this little job myself as my friendly Morgan dealer is booking 2 months ahead and i'd like it fixed before road debris get into the rack. What has surprised me is how hard/brittle the split one is compared to the one that's still ok - which is still supple and soft. Both are originals from late 2015 and yet have aged differently. Didn't look split until I turned the steering onto lock - the tell-tell sign was the presence of lubricant as per Richards photos.

Having just completed some front end work which did involve moving steering from lock to lock a few times, just noticed one of mine is split doh Wetness underneath and can easily see the split underneath in n/s gaiter at outer end. Can't remember if KH replaced them when they attended to original leak under warranty, but that was less than 3000 miles ago! These are used on all recent Classics under MMC part # MSR0281 and appear to be of a relatively brittle plastic (or age to such), so not surprising they split.

Have just ordered a pair of universal fit steering rack gaiters from Car Builder Solutions as suggested further up this thread. Hopefully KH will be happy to fit them if they appear more supple than originals. If not at least I will have spares.

I've just done some work on my JK rack: £90 for an OEM gaiter, easy to replace.

https://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/Morgan_Steering_Rack_Gaiters.html

Quaife racks covered as well

I played around and fettled a bit and fit a £9 Saab one.

Original new at top, Saab middle, my old one minus ends bottom.

As fitted

Good discovery that Saab one, I've always thought the OE one for the Jack Knight rack is way too stiff, replaced 3 times on the last Roadster

Thanks Treesurveyor, great tip.

That Saab gaiter looks very similar and I might give it a try although I do wonder if the convolutions might bind on full lock. Have you tried that and can you still get full lock?

Which model and year Saab is it from?

Hi IvorMog
Yes no problems with full lock. Its a Saab 93 to 2002/3, or Daewoo.
I'm still refining the fit. The Lemforder Gaiter ends have an ID of 54mm, the JK Rack is 38mm OD
so I castellated the ends to close the gap, and double tied. I'm in the process of sourcing split collars to go inboard of the mounting bracket
to increase the OD of that part to 54mm. I was thinking aluminium from stock billet with a couple of clamp screws, to keep it professional,
but I think I may end up making ply prototypes as the lathe engineers I've contacted can't seem to grasp the concept.
Maybe someone on here can turn them out?
BTW, I may have found a clearance item at £9, as most seem to be £20-30, although the link above may be the last at £15.99.
but still good value at £30.00
I'll switch to stainless hose clips for the final as well.
I`ve just done the centre bolts to the rack hand tight plus a pinch to line the flat.

s up on the lock tabs, and used tell tales.
The feel of this gaiter is much more robust than the JK affair.

Details and specs below

This may do also, although shorter at 348mm as opposed to 422mm, may be spread the bellows out a bit? to mitigate compression
