+1 ..... I have a video of him speaking on C-SPAN in the USA about a state visit to Japan. He comments that he was asked if this was his first visit to Japan and his response that it was. He felt it would have been insensitive to comment that he was there for the surrendered and then says that this shows he isn't as sensitive as some claim.

I was sent it on Whats App, but can't get it off to post a link.

He would have been a cracking "after dinner speaker"!!

I'm delighted that now he is dead many people feel able to share their personal anecdotes: pulled together they show his true character and most will think more highly of him in death than in life.
He really didn't care what people thought of him, it seems, as long as he was living to his own high standards.
His sense of humour was wonderful, he would have made one hell of a chair on "Have I Got News For You"......
