It is reported a car transporter ship is abandoned and drifting off the Netherlands as a fire had become out of control. 30+ EVs on the ship going from North Europe to the Med, and onwards.
A year or so back VAG lost a load of cars when a ship caught fire and sank off the Azores.
It seems to me that EVs have shipping risks that are not being fully managed.

It is reportet that a battery of one of the 30 EVs caught fire.
Problem with EVs is that a burning battery can only be extinguished with a lot of water.
The German firefighter are testing a with water filled container.
But using to much water is very dangerous for this transporter ship...

I don't think we are being told about all the dangers regarding the flammability of EV batteries. Some Norwegian ferries have now banned EV and hydrogen cars on their ferries. This ship off the Dutch island of Ameland had 3000 ICE cars and 25 EVs on board. Can't imagine if there are 3000 EVs in the future. A normally equipped German fire brigade is powerless against a battery fire. In order to enable faster and faster charging times, EV batteries are becoming increasingly low resistance. This increases the risk of fire. It is unthinkable if more EVs than ICEs will be parked in all underground garages in the future...and what if such an EV burns in the Gotthard tunnel.

Just watched a segment on the news of batteries in scooters and bikes.
They shown of the aftermath of battery exploding in a house.Total burnt out shell.
And a ctv of one exploding in a kitchen.
The amount of energy stored and released as a flame is like a fire bomb..

A couple of Teslas have caught fire here, the fire boys make sure that all the people are safe then stand back and let them burn out, I know of at least three lithium battery fires on boats -which are potentially much more dangerous as you cant jump out and walk home that easily!j

Well at least solid state batteries are less likely to suffer from thermal runaway which causes this issue in trad Lithium ones. The solid electrolyte is non-flammable, can withstand higher temperatures without de-stabilising and is less likely to suffer short circuits. They can also store and deliver higher currents and have a longer life. The manufacturing process is more intense though leading to higher costs.
Toyota appear to be current leaders in this technology but still a wait until 2027 before their forecast release.

I also read that Toyota is coming with solid state batteries in 2027. Many advantages at once, and they make projects like the two new Caterham models more tangible. Until then, only super luxury exotics with solid state batteries. And anyone who buys a completely overpriced e.g. EV compact car with old battery technology today should know what his car will be worth in a few years.
