Well I;m not sure about swmbo 's knickers John, but certainly so much stuff has oil content, even a lot of medicines.
The "Just Stop Oil" bunch might get a bit of a shock if their wishes came to pass smile

Don't disagree with you, the biggest consumer of oil is the plastics industry. But I do find the Norwegian sense of the moral high ground on the banning of the ICE is very akin to the UK claiming it's made the greatest reductions in its green house gases since 1990, doesn't reflect that we have off shored our dirty consumerism to places like China and then point the finger at them.

Oil will still be a part of our culture for decades to come, at least the UK is now starting to realise, if we are still to need hydrocarbons, then use our own oil and gas rather than leave it in the ground and buy in from abroad. Create/retain wealth in the UK and reduce our exposure to foreign influences.

Norway has agreed to reduce its CO2 emissions.
This is challenging for an oil and gas producer.

To cut CO2 emmissions, oil has been banned for heating buildings and ppl encouraged to buy EV`s.

New cars are heavily taxed in N on purchase. EV`s has enjoyed reduced taxes.
The result of this is that a 500hp EV was much cheaper than a 500hp fossil fuel car.
Now the tax reduction for expensive EV has been adjusted.
EV`s has also been excempt from road toll and could also drive in the bus lane.

Myself I`ve been working in the oil and gas industry for many years.
I also believe its sensible to burn less oil and gas, but I don`t see how we could survive without o&g.
O&G is in almost all products we need except food(but needed for growing and harvesting)

In the end it gets down to the fact that the earth has a really bad infestation of humans.

Mind you I am not volunteering to jump off the planet however until world population is significantly reduced not much is going to change,

As far as plastic is concerned the major challenge is keeping it out of the environment, which, in the end, really means keeping it out of the water.

A woman in a stop oil blockade shouted at the TV camera that children are crying and having nightmares over climate change. I thought yes because of idiots like you gal creating panic. These are the type of people that want cows eradicated but there nine billion humans farting all over the world. Some more than others.

''Oil and gas are “not the problem” for the climate, but the carbon emissions arising from them are, the UK’s net zero minister has told MPs.

In words that suggested the UK could place yet more emphasis on technologies to capture and store carbon, Graham Stuart said fossil fuel production was not driving climate change, but demand for fossil fuels, in a bullish defence of the government’s much-criticised stance. The Minister went onto say “I don’t think supply is the key driver – it is demand we need to focus on''.

Obviously, reference was made to greater reliance on carbon capture and carbon scrubbing technology and renewable energy generation to clean up our act in conjunction with increasingly more strict emission standards, is not the flavour of the month for Green Peace and other environmentalists who are highly critical of this new government position. A government position that starts to take on board the reality of how are people to pay for the massive infrastructure and behavioural change going forward, when in reality the environmentalists have no solutions as to how everyday life will go on in eg a plastic free world if there is no future for hydrocarbons, animals in the food chain etc.

Yet on the other hand we also have environmentalists against the creation of an energy generating tidal barrier in the Wash because of a wild bird sanctuary might be disturbed. We have people objecting against land based wind turbines in Scotland, yet in contrast locally our entire coastline around Morecambe Bay has been changed forever by a massive ever growing wind farms with little or no local objection as the pragmatic realisation that we need the green energy supply to move forward. Recognising that by 2050,it is predicted that most of where I live will be under water with the rising sea levels..................

It all reminds me of an hour long nature programme that focused nearly all of the programme on the loss of puffins (and sand eels they feed on ) from part of the NW coastline and the natural disaster it represented in the immediate vicinity. Only at the very end of a program full of climate change and local eco disaster chest beating, did it in the closing minutes to point out that the sand eels and therefore their predators the Puffins had moved further north and were thriving there.

We certainly need to clean up our act, otherwise I'm sure that the microplastics in our water will eventually see us all off. We need more pragmatic affordable solutions, whilst not destroying our economy under the knife of global warming, recognising that our domestic consumerism is driving green house gasses production elsewhere in the world and we do need to change some behaviours but not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Mind you I do worry when recent research indicated that a recent unexpected increases in sea temperatures maybe linked to cleaning up shipping emissions and that the reduction in soot being emitted by shipping may be reducing the amount of the sun's rays being deflected and hence the sea is warming up....not all soot is a bad thing and how much of our temperature increase is due to the cleaner less sooty environment .

Reminds me a a SciFi story that I read in a periodical from the '50s or '60s in which the hero saved the colonised planet from the sudden overheating of the local sun by exploding rockets, just outside the atmosphere, that were full of some substance which reflected the suns rays. If I recall correctly it was sulphur because it surrounded the planet in a golden haze.

Perhaps all we need is another Krakatau, In 1883, Krakatau’s explosion caused a century of climate chaos

Then again perhaps the rise in ocean temperatures is the result of recovery from the cooling effect of Krakatua. thinking

What a great idea. It could be turned into carbon briquettes that we could then burn in the barbecue in summer or for heating in winter stirpot

I think they are thinking more along the lines of using defunct and new oil and gas fields, old coal mines etc. for carbon storage , although there is research going on with regards to thermal exchange for local heating from old deep coal mine water. The USA already has a trail underway with a carbon scrubber which is cleaning the air. Any way to recycle or capture carbon must add some value in the for the greater good.......whether reburning to release it again, balances out I'm not so sure
