I have to ask before I hurt myself or break something - is there a trick to removing the big nut on the RH side of the rear axle?
Over the winter, the rear brake seems to have bound so that there is drag and the rear wheel does not spin freely. I am trying to get the rear wheel off to service the brake. I’ve watched Phil Blealey’s video, but it just says remove the split pin and nut with no further detail. I’ve put all my weight on it to no avail. The hole for the split pin is still perfectly aligned with the castle nut. Do they have gorilla at the factory installing these things?

You need an extra long spanner, the longer the better, mine is 550mm long, and then brute force.

Have a look at Slogging Spanners on Ebay. You need a 36mm size and you can get it as a large ring spanner that you can slip a scaffold pole over....that will shift it!

Two spanners with one lashed to the frame and the long one with all your body weight on it is about right.

My question is why is it so tight? The whole deal with a castellated nut is that you wouldn't apply a torque per se - finger tight plus two flats was what I was taught...

It needs a lot of tension in the spindle to get sufficient clamping force to hold it in place in the swing arm. It really wants to move out of alignment. hence the high torque.

Since I changed the system, I do not have the problem of "the extreme tight issue" anymore. Just simple "Tied is Tied enough" because it can not move anymore.
