Just a couple of days ago, I too had a message flagged up in my non-Morgan advising to change the battery in my key.

I have known of button battery terminals to come with a self adhesive insulation material stuck on one side, which requires to be removed prior to fitting to whatever device... No such insulating coating or material noted on any of the two replacement batteries... and that I was able to measure the voltage available on each of the two batteries, seemed to confirm there was no such insulating coating.

Generally there is some sort of spring action which maintains pressure in terms of the electrical contacts in the device, and when installing new barreries the spring action can wipe the area of contact between device and battery to assist in making good electrical contact.... Often battery operated devices left unused can fail to operate just due to dirty points of connection at the battery building up over time, either on the device or on the battery, or a mix of both...

With the above in mind, given the key`s operation was restored with the old battery re-installed, it seemed that the keys connection point to the battery was not in doubt,

Becoming increasingly dismayed with my electrical incompetence, I found some light grade steel wool and gave both batteries a gentle rub with it on both sides..... both battery`s now operated in the key when tested.

I now carry a spare new battery in the glove box of the car, along with a small piece of steel wool too...!

...

Any comments on my trials and tribulations gratefully received as ever...

I've come across the same problem on the Volvo forum. Duracell batteries have a Bitrex coating which can cause problems. https://www.duracell-me.com/technology/lithium-coin-battery-safety/

Heinz, jeez, that is the issue with all this digital stuff, it advances by the minute and unless you are provided with precise information using base level logic is of little use.

GrumpyPa I suspect you have provided the answer to the issue that was close to driving me nuts.... Thanks.

CooperMan like you I had no idea that kids were inclined to swallow batteries and that there might be some kind of distasteful coating applied to make them taste foul enough to kids to stop them putting them in their mouth... Every day is a school-day. (-:

Interesting nay shocking issue. The batteries being discussed are easily seen but consider the smaller size 13 type used in hearing aids - approx 7 x 5mm. A tirade from a nephews wife who discovered one on the carpet of my Mums home many years ago when they brought their two very young boys over from Canada shocked the rest of our family. However on consideration the consequences of one being swallowed are very real. Ironically I'm the one now using hearing aids but am super careful when disposing of used batteries and plan to get rechargeable aids in the near future.

That was one reason I changed as we have 3 grandchildren visiting at times, needed a Boots hearing check a couple of years back and went with the Phonak rechargables, not cheap but piece of mind and marginally better hearing as a bonus compared to the NHS one's laugh2

p.s A really useful thing is on Bluetooth you can tune your own program in live which helps.

p.p.s. The batteries being discussed are the one's that get stuck in the throats of young one's. Smaller one's pass through the body fast enough to sometimes not cause damage.

Not having any children about the house for circa 30 years, I guess my personal priorities may differ somewhat and I was greatly frustrated to think perhaps I was suffering some degree of incapability relative to basic electrical understanding..... Though seems I managed to work my way through it.

I expect that the coating must be conductive to some extent but it seems not enough for some devices that may not generate enough spring pressure or may not have teeth to cut into the coating as the battery is slid into place, such as in my garage door remotes....

I wonder how many batteries and or devices might be binned, if this issue is as common as I imagine it might be..?

It seems we may live in a world of ever increasing unintended consequences.. ?

Although we have two cars that need the CR batteries - I'm delighted my favourite car has a key as I actually think all this electronic nonsense is very nanyish - if you can't work a lock it's time to stop driving rofl

Very fortunately the car in question has a semi secret key slot hidden under the handle and the key fob has an inbuilt key which can be slid out should there be an issue with the key fob operation... Very Germanic design...(-: Though having typed that, if the car`s main battery goes flat, as it seems a few may do if laid-up for months, trying to gain access to the battery under the electrically released bonnet, has caused grief for numerous folk..... Though in reality there is a simple work around, which for some can be less than convenient dependant on circumstances...

The digitisation of everything seems to have a dumbing down effect on the general populace and the configuration of systems at times seems to defy any kind of basic electromechanical logic..?

Rant over, time for this Luddite to stop typing.... hide oldgit

Both the Ford Titanium and the GTI have a similar arrangement George but the later has it's battery in the boot allegedly for better weight distribution..

p.s. I always wipe the sticky kids label off the small cells with meths so never had a problem with replacements.

I think the film is only around the edge. In many applications the contacts are in the centre of the battery. In my Volvo key the +ve contact is on the edge.

I wrote about my stupidity with the Volvo fob battery shortly after I joined the group last year. Think original had Bitex on but the new ones were well blister packed and had small clear discs as well . What I didn’t see was a 4 mm sticker that looked like print and so did not work. The Volvo/AA man came out and took off the sticker !!! Agghh numpty but in truth he did not spot it for a while after trying several times.

Anyway, so pleased several of you guys talk about hearing aids……..is it a thing ……especially after ** years of age !?
I’ve been pretty deaf in one ear since about 16 after a stupid deep Lakes dive ( not that we knew it was daft at the time ) .
Lived with it all these years but parties, gatherings, weddings, funerals, quiz nights, it’s a bloody nightmare now and I just nod, smile politely or answer wrongly ! My wife wants me to sort it. We used to print for Widex, a big American supplier who at the time had the worlds smallest (?).
I just cannot understand the ridiculous cost of hearing aid and its limited tech. Size of market compared to a mobile phone or other tech.

Anyway, dear TM Ed’s who suffer, have you any recommendations for brands, models etc.

Your knowledgable help would be appreciated by my wife !! MM
PS about cars to get back on track, just hired a 208 in Europe to try an easy ski slope with my new knee . Overnight I have become a bad driver ………the warning sign goes on all the time saying too close to a line, it posts a big note on the screen if I touch one it beeps incessantly as it reads every village speed down to 30 KPH , It is so sensitive . it them bubbly mumbles increasing in volume . It’s none stop bells, whistles and signs. If this stuff ever gets stored and given to insurance companies, premiums would sore and many off the road. Thankfully the Volvo is OK in this respect. It respects its owners driving style , Ho Ho Ho.
