I am not sure but i think all the steering is coming from BMW. It is not really about the type of steering rack that is the problem: it is about the security of how it is mounted at the factory including a system to check that such a critical part has been correctly mounted. Beyond that there is the issue of whether or not a check, and or security modification, should be performed on all cars in this series. There is also the question of whether or not a customer should pay for rectification on a car with relatively low mileage even though it is out of warranty. It is not normal that a customer should pay for something that is clearly a factory fault, and a security issue, that perhaps should be subject to a recall. At the least this is appallingly bad publicity for the factory and should have been resolved in the smoothest possible way along with sincere appologies to the customer.

Or you could call it a feature. I agree Peter lets give MMC a chance to get it right.

I pick the car up tomorrow. Not happy with the explanation or bill to be honest, They had never seen it before and would be reported to the design team. The car should go to the factory for servicing apparently and they might have picked it up. Bare with me, bought the car at about 3k just had a service back to Morgan for a rad at about 6k so they pull the front apart so the rack is visible. I get the car back Mot and service the rack bye the way is covered by an ali plate. Another Mot and small service oils and filter etc.So inbetween the factory and two mot and service is only 6k miles. So my suggestion was that this could have happened at any time. I cant begin to explain to you how dangerous this could have been the whole thing was held together bye a thread. Given the car has only done 13k molly coddled miles and the seriousness of the situation I thought they would have at least picked up half the cost. Anyway paid the bill don't ask how much and another trudge back up to Malvern. You do not expect this on a car with 13k on the clock one very unhappy Morgan customer. Em I can understand your disappointment with Morgan and your concern about this serious issue.

A bullet for your armoury…
Copied from Gov.uk “Vehicle recalls and faults”:
If you find a serious defect that affects the safety of your vehicle, one of its parts, or an accessory, report it to the manufacturer immediately.
Tell the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) if you’re not happy with how the manufacturer is dealing with your report.
DVSA will:
investigate the issue with the manufacturer tell you what action is being taken The vehicle, part or accessory can be recalled if it’s found to be a serious safety issue.
What counts as a serious safety defect
A serious safety defect is something:
about the way the vehicle is designed or made that’s likely to cause injury or death that happens suddenly and without warning MMC has "form" when it comes to shoddy engineering. Where do I start - the great sagging spring saga on Trads, cracked M3W chassis, pedal box issues, brakes and radiator problems with later models, the list goes on. Get this in front of the authorities ASAP......

It's a small world, just back from dropping off my Morgan at Life's for its service and MOT, and there was a beautiful Aero Coupe up on the ramp, having some work done on the front of the engine/radiator. I mentioned to Matt about the P6 steering rack issue as I was looking around the car. I hope the owner doesn't mind me mentioning this, Matt had just finished tightening up the right hand steering rack nut as it was loose, the left hand one was tight. He started to investigate as he felt some unusual shimmy in the steering, when taking it for it's MOT. An issue not picked up on the MOT because it's not easy area to access.
There are apparently only 2 bolts that hold it in place .

When I had problems with one of the control units and the vehicle would suddenly stop driving, my PlusFour was at the dealer for 2 weeks and the fault could not be found. I then contacted Massimo Fumarola and he and his team helped me immediately. I would be the first to go this route and give MMC a chance. I agree with Peter about the invoice... that is unacceptable. I still have a technical question... which screw are we talking about? Is it the one John showed or a bolt inside the connecting rod gearbox. I've only found one picture in my collection where you can see part of the rack and as an example a picture of a BMW steering rack from a spare parts catalog. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2025/05/18/DETAIL_Morgan_Plus_Four_CX-T_026-1-1024x657.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2025/05/19/Zahnstange.png)

Not the one I showed rather whatever holds down the rack I guess. The plate makes access v difficult. But from what I can see from above it looks to be a bmw rack.
