I came upon this morning, a minor fender bender accident blocking the sole road from my French house into the village (to collect my morning croissant). As I was now also blocking the road, I turned on my emergency flashers. However when I turned off the ignition to get out of the car, to my surprise, the flashers also stopped. Surely this does not meet construction and use regulations, which state that the emergency flashers must be available at all conditions of the ignition, run, accessory and any other condition. Was this a boo-boo by Morgan on early (2012) cars like mine, later corrected or are they all like this. Originally the horn was also like this but when I replaced the original "mouse with laryngitis" horn with a 127dB Italian Klaxon, I wired it direct to the battery via a fuse and relay.

That shouldn't be the case. The horn and hazard warning lights share the same direct battery feed via fuse 2 so both are designed to work with ignition off. This is the same with early and late versions of M3W. After fuse 2 the continuous power is fed to horn and hazard circuits via individual purple/black wires. The hazard one feeds directly to the hazard switch (via connector) on pre 2014 models and via TSM on later ones. This assumes wiring has not been changed possibly to solve another issue

You could perhaps confirm with a multimeter that connections each side of fuse 2 are live with ignition off.

I wonder if Morgan got it wrong when they ran the car through the production process again in 2018, after their local French agent (not M3W Services who are excellent but a long way away from me on the other side of France) had made a total "Horlicks" on the chassis replacement, starting by dropping the new chassis off the delivery truck and irretrievably bending it. It all went downhill from there with rear wheel bearings mounted reversed, to shorting out the brand new Harley Davidson rectifier/voltage controller supplied by me and other faults too numerous to mention. I have a feeling that before this the flashers worked correctly with the ignition off, like my rewiring of the horn does. Once it cools down a bit (too hot to work outside for a disabled 80 year old in the south of France at present), I will get my enormous AvoMeter No.8.Mk.7 out and check on the fuse box. Great instruments the AVO's, I have three of various vintage . They do require regular use to keep contacts clean though.

My favourite is my heavy electrical gold metal cased one of my pair.

I am a bit behind you. I only have two AVOmeter 8s a Mk.6 and a Mk7. However I do also have a hand cranked 500v Megger insulation and earth circuit tested from 1955, which still works perfectly.

This wee R/S auto ranging meter with thermocouple is the one I use on the cars though and £30 you can’t go wrong.

Doesn't have the charisma of one of these though Richard which I'm sure you have used in the past.



So much more meaningful seeing a needle flick over rather than rapidly changing digits. This is my international AVO 9 mk2 BTW with symbols rather than text and slightly differing ranges.

I have an 8 and an older gold metal bodied heavy electrics one I’ll dig out of the garage when it’s cooler.

The metal back plate on the AVO is a great disadvantage I find on car electrics I find and their bouncability is not good.


They are romantic things but too cumbersome and liable to cause damage working on the Morgan’s and the thermocouple is a handy feature on the RS one.

We were issued with all singing dancing Flukes at work and they were very good indeed.

Bouncability is always a critical concern for me. If it can be droped it will be dropped at some point! And usually at the most inconvenient moment!
