I suspect the BMW engines may be too costly for a more economical range. Ford produce a huge number of crate engines and the 2L Ecoboost looks a good option at 255 PS (188 kW; 252 hp) at 5500 rpm, 270 lb·ft (366 N·m) at 1750–4500 rpm

Don't forget it is not just the engine that has a reduced cost, it is the entire drve train.

Also I understand that the Aero suspension system is rather complex and costly. A clever redesign with the use of stock components from another manufacturer would probably save here too.
