I had a similar experience driving home from England (to Sweden) when the car was new to me but it wasn't a cough, it just died. The starter worked but the engine wouldn't start. It had been a very wet trip all the way through Denmark so I suspected that had something to do with it. After checking the fuses and wiggling them a bit it started and has worked perfectly since (2,5 yrs). I have used cleaners and protecting sprays specially made for electrical connectors after that though.
