I can think of two reasons:

First, BMW has a history of working with small companies that produce special cars based on their motors, including Morgan, Alpina and I suppose Rolls Royce.

Second, BMW is still a family owned firm that is actually interested in cars and driving. Ford is just a public consumer goods business that makes a product that happen to be cars.
