Nick I think if you look a bit further you will find that it is the EU, or more correctly a number of EU countries, who are now fighting hard to win this battle for data protection. In the past a deal was done, with the backing of the UK, which a number of organisations in Germany, Austria and some other countries are now trying hard to get undone. Germany has been one of the most outspoken countries against US companies exploiting personal data. The EU sometimes does things that the UK wants and still ends up getting bad press for it. However well meaning the whole exercise is, the fact is that the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing inefficiency of it all means that actually we are unprotected. Perhaps if the new arrangements had been put in place before the old ones were overruled......?
