Quite why one would be provided with free charging points is beyond me, I pay for my petrol !
If you buy your home electricity from Ecotricity, they provide you with a card to use their vehicle charging points for free (or did).
As for the modern electronics, as an electronics engineer (by trade) there is no reason why they shouldn't last the lifetime of a product. Unfortunately, as with many things, buying in cheaper components in order to maximise profit margins stuffs the reliability/longevity...
