In Western Australia, personalised plates are around $500 - $600 and there are some limitations other than availability. Not all plates are tradeable, and you must have a certificate to say you can trade the plate.
You are supposedly not allowed certain vehicle names, but there are ways around this as I have done on my Morgans.
