For traffic, Graham, you may wish to consider investing in a new SatNav. I've just picked up a TomTom Via 62, which uses your phone's data link to provide live updates of traffic conditions along your route. It shows you how far away the hold up is, how long it's likely to delay you, and gives you the option of seeking an alternate route.

The other nice thing that will appeal to map-lovers like you and me is that you can go on to Google Maps, set out a route that takes you on the roads you want to go on, and you can then convert the route to a GPX file and download it to the SatNav.

I used it yesterday to plot a very quiet B road route to Bicester and back, and it worked very well.
