Growing up in the 1960s I did what I wanted, went where I wanted. Rode my Lambretta up to the top of Leigh Hill and no one seemed to care. Try that today?
Boys Grammar School..yes, a dress code but essentially white shirt, tie, grey trousers and black blazer with a school badge on the pocket. We had free choice of sock colour, but wearing 2 differently coloured socks was taboo! Then fluorescent socks arrived. Much angst, until they were banned unless in your house colour!!
We grew up wearing uniforms, school, scouts, ATC.
Then university, where there was, in effect, an informal dress code......jeans and scruffy T shirt.
To work, 1975 suite, tie, Samsonite briefcase....
The hot summer of 1976 I was a sales rep in London, visiting the University and Hospital Laboratories for BDH Chemicals. We were told by the sales manager that it was OK to wear a short sleeved shirt under our jacket, but with customers we had to keep a jacket and tie on!!
Oh well...
