It is even easier than that. The piston that pushes the grease is free floating, another plunger pushes against it under spring pressure but isn't fixed to it, so pulling back the chain doesn't create a vacuum. Just pull back the chain and lock it and push the cylinder into the grease, the floating piston will be forced back up the tube.
