Thats the way I have to do my mohair hood (it shrank slightly after reproofing). Usually with a pair of pliers to help fasten the last few turnbuckles.
The correct way is to attach the rear, pull over erect hoodsticks then fasten lift-a-dots to windscreen. However, do be careful, you can crack the windscreen.
I recommend some of John Taylor's over-centre hood swivels as Steve suggests. These allow the hoodsticks to sit a little lower while fastening the hood, then can be swung around to tension the hood. Can't be fitted to cars with bench seats (like my '76) though.
