I have a Garmin bought a couple of years ago to replace the knackered Tomtom. It works well. I did have a Tomtom app on my old android phone and that was handy but signal reliant. I also like the preprogrammable routes on Garmin too....allowing nice routes. Mind you I tend to set a route off a map and only use Satnav when closer to the destination or forced into a detour. I often set the Satnav for chosen waypoints too....a bit of paper map perusing first to get a base route.
The only way ai would use just iPhone now is to get a monthly plan with good data included.
