Lots of engines have belts that are exposed to heat and the real heat on an S&S is not the lower front but the top end.
But we also have a MANTRA in the "old Gold Wing" world that goes "Change the Belts!" One of the big risks for engines that have a lot of down time is the belt sits in one position for an extended period. This causes them to have a "set" position. So on my 78 wing which I change out the belts every 5 or 6 years even though I do not put a lot of miles on it during that time.
