I think you may have encountered a case of local plod not wishing to get involved with the paperwork. Farmers have a very definite obligation to keep the roads clean and to warn road users of any potential hazard. The fine for failing to do so could be as much as £1,000 and they could be charged with causing danger to road users.

I am no lawyer but I suspect with the correct advice you could not only have recovered the cost of repair to the car but could have demanded compensation for the psychological trauma and loss of your sporting activity.
