Although the fuel gauge will never be something to be relied upon more consistent readings can be restored, particularly after a period of inactivity, by cleaning the two resistance fine wires inside the transmitter. Remove the transmitter unit and take the small nut off the base of the cover, this will allow the cover to be removed and expose the two fine wires with the float. Carefully clean the two wires with a metal polish or very fine abrasive crocus cloth. Re-assemble and clean the transmitter spade contacts. This seems to restore the random readings to steadier random readings, not great but better.
