I've had the air filter assembly off and managed to get my fingers on the bits you pinch, at the back so would be able to get a tool onto the clip to cut it off. There is, however, still little wriggle room to try and prise it out. Might just end up leaving it to the experts, as there's an issue as to why the engine overheated, and had low oil pressure.
