OK...I buy a marginal impact of spray from front wheels but have not seen much from ours in pretty wet weather

Trouble is that if traction rather than wheel-spin is required, it requires a wide back tyre which on our cars will suffer more than a 4 wheel car as the front wheels do not clear any water ahead of it.

Best solution could be the twin narrow wheel approach of a few decades ago (JJD tyres) that led to a short-lived tyre design(Goodyear Aquatred) with a very deep centre groove. There are residues of some of this thinking in modern designs some of which may help us but there is no substitute for lots of tread and real caution on speed with standing water.
