It might help with the rear traction if they cluster the cells carefully. Porsche are said to be grouping the cells in a stack behind the rear seats for the next Boxster. It is intended to keep the polar moment of inertia similar to a mid engine/box layout which the car is so well known for.

As a matter of interest I thought there was an exemption for small volume builders to remain with ICE/PHEV of some sort? Or was that just in my head?
