Watched Top Gear yesterday. They point out that hilly country massively affects range. He said something like... it's a bit much when you are driving a 90T pound car and the sight of a hill induces panic....
Did they not have regen switched on then? Or was their route only uphill? Perhaps they were trying to drive up Escher's staircase?
Fortunately there really isn't a problem. People who don't want to buy an EV don't have to, they can stick with their ICE cars for at least the next 30 years or so. The last new ICE cars will be sold in 2030 and will be perfectly usable for 20 years or so. My 20 year old Landy is fine so there's no reason to believe a 2030 car won't be equally as durable.
By that time the tech will have caught up and people can make the switch once they are comfortable. Or buy an FCEV or something even more high tech.
Me, I'm quite happy to be an early(ish) adopter. I don't need long range and I really like the idea of dirt-cheap fun motoring powered by the wind and the sun. I figure I've got probably another 15-17 years driving in me, the Mini will be fine for that, even if the range degrades. By the time I'm 77 I daresay I'll be happy just to pootle a few miles each way to town.
