So I took the Coupe into John Klies in Reading today to take a little look. They had some lovely stuff in there including a Pork 930 which was having a lot of hardware hidden in it. Work was very good looking at it.
The Coupe is previous generation to the S5 you highlight but I figure it is worth sharing the activity on the thread.
Does anyone know where the AMP is traditionally fitted in the Supersport/Coupe. I am told under the passenger seat but the Coupe has the Tillet Carbon seats and we cannot find anything through the slot or from either end.
CurrentlyIt has the original factory fit Alpine CD117i unit. It is traditional in dash single DIN.
There is rumour it has an amp, I would be surprised given the feeble output. Trying to find it?
I replaced the rear 6x9 units with Focal high end some time back but in truth it was useless as the issue is driving them well.
The front mid 4x6 door and dash tweeters are standard and lost.
GoalsI wanted to add DAB (the aerial will be fun)
I want at least iPhone via bluetooth to use music and waze etc. Wireless Carplay would be top outcome.
I am not expecting to make phone calls given the noise in the Coupe alongside the sidepipes.
Given the quite big bottom on the Coupe I did want to see if I can get a reversing camera as the garage is quite tight.
Better sound quality as it is dire at present.
Bluetooth to the amp so just using iPhone, amp, speakers is one option but in the end not so good. Apparently this means the ability to change balance/mix/fade etc is not practical
New head unit is recommended plus wiring inspection as they feel it has been badly setup from the sound quality.
They are going to look for 4x6 front door speakers but choice is limited, also the tweeters may benefit from am upgrade. This will follow sorting the amp and head to see if they are worthwhile upgrades.
Head unit choice hit three options.
1. Bluetooth adapter onto the existing 117 with an adapter, still need to sort the sound quality etc and the adapter is 60% of the cost of a new DAB/BT head so that's out.
2. Basic mechless (no CD) modern head unit with DAB, good Bluetooth. Attach to amp, sort amp, sort cabling. (fight with sidepipes) (100-200 for the head)
3. Floating screen style single DIN unit which is adjusted to hang down below the DIN slot and not cover the speakers. We held a 7 and 9 inch screen in front of the dash and the 7 looked pretty good to my nerdy eyes.
I realise the iPad on the dash thing is not really "Morgan" however the Aero Coupe is a little off track for a Morgan anyway. Most of the 1 DIN normal head units are pretty ugly so putting them in is not going to make it any prettier than the existing tokyo-by-night thing. The iPad style screen floating in front of the dash is at least cleaner in style and very functional with wireless car play so the phone can hide. When we looked at the 7" screen floating in front of it I actually think it looks really good but I will admit to being a biased audience given my job for the last XX years has been around iPad style things. I get DAB, rear Camera, Wireless CarPlay, lots of adjustment, access to the switches.
What was it Robin Williams said in Good Morning Vietnam - why blend in when you can clash baby
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aW_UNvmfU4So best bet looks to be a tablet style head unit occupying the dash, work out if there is an amp and maybe sort that out plus the cabling to the speakers. Well that's birthday and christmas presents sorted out....oops.
All feedback welcome.
