As I have typed before, my chosen forum I.D. kinda gives a clue as to my thinking and where my datum point in Morgan`s history has been set and with much else ever measured relative to that datum in time.
That typed, I have to admit to being seduced to some degree by aspects of ever advancing technological innovation to have become a selective Luddite...(-:
Before I bought into the idea of a Morgan, I posed the question "Which Morgan" on the then MSCC DG which provided a response from quite a few very kind folk, so much so that I was hooked on that forum and also eMog when it appeared on the scene. After circa 5 years of reading contributions, I think I was perhaps educated enough as to that which a Morgan of any age might present in the way of foibles.
Prior to Morgan ownership I had a few decades of hands-on restoration, repair and maintenance of my own old sports Brit sports cars, to eventually end up as a fan of air cooled Porsches, which were famed for their build quality, and was indeed an improvement over that which I was used to...Thus it was with an almost encyclopaedic knowledge-base on the forums, that I joyfully entered Morgan ownership with eyes wide opened....Given I had cut my teeth on old carb based ICE design. I was more than happy that GoMoG found me a carb fed +8, with instructions that I must buy that car, and I did as I was told.... (-:
Now more than 20 ears on, and with a few European trips in HOT weather, as well as a few trips out in the snow locally over the years, it would seem my old car may be testament to old school simplicity and reliability, all be it with only circa 35k miles on the clock...
I am ever frustrated by stories of modern digital Morgans suffering something as simple as brake lights failing, or more correctly that the system of brake light control being such that a Morgan dealership seemed to be unable to repair within minutes, if not even after a number of re-visits..?
Given the choice of heading off on another European adventure I would feel far more confident to do so in my old +8. I and the tools carried acted as the breakdown insurance during our European trips, whereas my experience of making use of brakedown insurance on Mrs Luddite`s Evoque locally, was frustrating enough...
Much the same thinking applies to my 991.1 C4S Porsche, in that I would not be confident it could carry me on a trouble free European trip such as my old Morgan managed, whereas were it available I would be very happy to have taken an extended trip in my my old 82 911 SC.
It seems with the 911 derivatives evolving to the stage where water cooling became a must, that unfortunately some degree of reliability expectations of the air cooled days had been lost, and stayed lost for far too long..?
But then it seems factory recalls are no stranger to even the best of brands seemingly renown for quality and reliability..? It seems even Tesla despite the funding and technical brains behind them.... may be in some sort of recall situation.... That being the case.... I suspect the MMC may not be alone..?
EXPECTATIONS of the customer base would seem to be key, and expecting a Morgan to perform as well or better than a Porsche in terms of reliability....Well my mid 80`s +8 did way better than my 2012 Porsche has managed for me.
Quality parts John... ? I think they might be harder to find even on aircraft these days as it seems the occasional rogue part can cause catastrophe...?
