Isn't a key element in paying attention to the road ahead the decision which gear to select?
Saves all that tension involved in the auto deciding after the event...?
I believe this is what Rolls Royce does, it uses some sort of fancy GPS tech to figure out what the road ahead is doing so the transmission is in the correct gear.
Of course, the whole thing about geared transmissions all derives from the fundamental limitation of ICE engines in that they can't deliver a flat torque response.
An EV is of course always in the correct gear and always at the correct revs to deliver the required amount of torque to the driving wheels
