Crikey, thats not good!! Sounds a very unusual fault.. Just an off the wall idea but is there any up and down slop on the steering wheel, it hasnt come loose on its spline has it, or any other splined connections between the steering wheel and the rack. I havent got my car here to look at, but is there any UJ's or clamped spline joints between the steering column and the rack, if one had come loose it might explain your symptoms.??.. With the wheels straight ahead is the steering wheel still centred.. ??
It will be very interesting indeed to see what caused it. I would think the factory will want it back if you dont see the fault.. dave
