This has been on my “to do” list for a long time now. My fuel gauge has always been biased in one direction. When the tank is filled the needle remains hard pushed up against the end stop (almost out of sight) until I’ve used about 3 gallons, then it starts to fall normally. So I thought I would post my attempt at a bit of re calibration. Step.1 Find a suitable potentiometer to put in series with the gauge. Fill the tank, start engine and adjust pot until the needle just comes up to the full point. Step.2 Measure the pot. Step.3 Source a fixed resistor of a similar value (15 Ohm) and attach to gauge. The needle now looks better positioned when full. Only time will tell if it performs over the entire the range.

I have been runnig the roadster with the sidelights on as some folk don't see the car as it is dark blue.
But the gauges then mist up. Rog are those holes in what looks like the botom of your gauges drain holes?

John, the holes are at the top of the gauges and are original. I assume they are breather/vent holes.

If its a smiths gauge and sender it's supposed have a 10 volt regulator according to some sites.
I have yet to see if mine has said regulator.

A little late but I have just been asked for some results regarding this old post.
After adding the resister I did three tests. I measured the amount of fuel needed to fill the car from the ¾, ½ and ¼ gauge positions. Not very scientific but I tried to be as precise as possible. I used the same pump and filled to the first click. I remember just driving around to use up fuel until the right moment to top up again.
¾ full = 17.5 litres (to top up) ½ full = 27 litres ¼ full = 38 litres
My tank holds 55 litres, I have not done any testing below ¼ full and I only ever did the three tests.
