Makes no difference. But the exhaust pops and bangs .

What fuel do you use? Try 99 octane fuel (if you've not done so already), but even so, modern engines should allow for using 95 without pinking.

Unfortunately I don't think Esso is 'E' free now, however your BMW engine is tolerant of ethanol to levels way over UK uses and will map the ECU automatically

Exactly. I don't think it can be old fuel after 1600 miles

Throw some supper plus in it - the higher octane widens the knock window so it should stop it if it is pinking. There are knock sensors which should stop it but give that a go

Esso E5 is the higher octane fuel (98 RON IIRC), sadly not been ethanol free since last September or October. Tesco 99 is not recommended - caused Peter Jenks all sorts of problems with his Aero +8.

Cheap supermarket (Tesco) fuel was not liked by my S1 Roadster. It caused lambda sender problems on the passenger side in winter.
Swapping to Shell solved it.

My Plus8 with Gems management ran better on V-Power higher octane. The management light came on occasionally using std 95 octane. Checked everything but no joy. Started using the V-Power and it stopped.
The Plus Four runs on either E5 or E10. No really obvious difference in performance but slightly better mpg with E10. As happened too with the Plus8.
The Plus Four just had it's first annual service on Friday with 7k miles done. Two extras sorted. Loose grill and rear clunk at low speed stop-start.The graphite grease spline lube looks to have worked. Long winded crawl home on the M4 with a lot of stop-start and no clunk.

Correction. Slightly better mpg with E5 petrol.
