Not everyone is as flexible or small enough to get down & get under, I'm afraid.
Jacking up may not be necessary, but it gives an opportunity to take the wheels off for the task.
A remote kit allows for greasing without all this on a tour.
And as for wasteful..? What, the bit that fills the flexible pipe? I wipe off more than that when it comes out..!!
