I loved the look of the S5 when I first saw it at Genoa. I knew it would not be for me with the V8 engine but when I saw the forward opening boot and other details I was simply astonished that anyone would think this was a good idea.
If you recall the original concept was that the closing of the boot would tension the hood, also the fuel filler was concealed. Naturally we all want to open the boot to fuel our cars, don't we?
The trouble is with the S3 that they got so locked into the concept that they refused to change the design to something practical. I was looking at a '60s Alfa Spider the other day. An easy-up type hood that drops out of sight when down. Obviously a decent hood design is not rocket science and there are plenty of examples to copy!
