I'll try and be happier about the Costa now

I see a lot of discussion about using the post office for banking. If it is anything like here they seem to handle everything but the post. Well they do handle the post but it costs an arm and a leg to send anything more than a national letter and you have to wait anything up to an hour to post anything or collect a registered letter. Our mail deliveries are now every second day. Private mail delivery companies are now starting to compete for bulk mail.
I think I should be thankful for the Mail service that we have reading about yours Peter. Ours is an efficient service on the whole with 6 days a week deliveries even out in the sticks where we live.
You can get Car Tax, Fishing Licences and Passport paperwork from them as well. In our local village one there is never much of a wait unless you are behind one of those ebay sellers, well that could take a long time when they have 50 parcels.
We do have private mail companies but this came about due to the Royal Mail workers continued strikes at one time, big business got fed up and found alternatives some of which are still used.
