If I understand it correctly a much larger amount of CO2 is stored within the peat bogs where the palm trees are being planted. It is the drying out of the peat bogs that releases a lot of CO2 and reduces the capacity to absorb CO2. Clearing of the existing forests, very often involving burning of course also releases a lot of CO2.
