Similar choices we two/too have made alongside bringing up three kids. Tried tenting and its fine when your young enough to sleep on the ground. Tried caravanning and thats good except it takes up space and sits around doing nothing for months on end. Towed a caravan to the upper parts of Norway - fabulous scenary. Tried a long camper van tour of NZ. Also various tours in the 4/4 using Airbnb and the smaller hotels across the channel. We now run the Morgan, a Toyota Yaris and the Volvo V70.
While funds and good health in retirement permits, our preferrence is to enjoy all three modes of transport. The Volvo tows a small boat and Helen really does not want a tow bar on the Yarris The Mog is not going any where near a saltwater slipway !
A hard choice to make sooner or later. Maybe the SORN option over-winter will be our next best solution.
