So if it is really a cost thing - tha calculate the true cost of a camper van.
If it is about building things and improving a van to it`s best - it might be worth condsidering.
I use the van for business overnight as a hate to pay the full fee for a 5 hours sleep without breakfast.
And I do have full work environment where ever I am.
On vacation it is the other way round.
No amount of horses could track me to a camp ground;-)
Family run small hotels or B&B are the best way for me to get in touch with locals.
Only beaten by visiting friends....
And there is the cottage. No other reason to keep it as this is the only stable place in all my life and I can feel at home instantly.
So it will not be the pro and con table to decide upon.
It reminds me of a Winnie the Pooh striper where Piglet asks Winnie: "How do you spell love?"
