Electrically the ground connection should still work as it passes through the rear loom connector albeit it on a single cable! Poor practice though as apart from extra length in circuit you have combined rear light current through one cable plus contact resistance and potential unreliability in the plug/socket to rear loom. Later models still have ground fed through the rear loom connector but also two ground eyelets each with multiple cables to supplement ground locally and individually.
