I'd avoid removing sump plug to drain any oil as the sump plugs are known to strip the thread in the crankcase quite easily.
I actually unplug the rectifier lead and crank over to scavenge the oil but this involves removing the bonnet - or do as Callum says just remove the plug leads and then crank it over.
