The belt is maintenance free and commonly used on Harleys so well proven. The alternative of chain drive would mean regular adjustment and oiling, unless it was designed to run in an enclosed oil bath and the other route...shaft drive and bevel box would just add to the unsprung weight, complexity and cost.
