John, my old Mog was found as the result of efforts made by GoMoG, AKA Lorne. other than that I would never have come across it.
The +8 was initially the equivalent of a barn find with only circa 8k miles travelled since new, at the time it was bought by Kevin, who stripped it down to the bare chassis, and repainted the chassis, rear axle, brake back plates, bulkhead, inner wings, petrol tank and radiator tanks in two pack high gloss black. Kevin provided me with pics of the rebuild..
All the bodywork is alloy, and was resprayed from original white to Cabernet, which is a Jaguar colour. During the rebuild process stainless steel fixings were used in most places, converted to Koni tubular shockers all round, copper brake pipes, with metal braided flexibles, thus it was pretty much in Concours condition the day I bought it.... Kevin had set it up for touring with heavier rear springs and it came with a whole list of spares best carried while touring, and with a colour matching fibreglass case lined in the same colour material as the Mog`s trim. I suspect as Kevin was a Morgan enthusiast of wide experience of repairing them, he knew where the usual foibles might be found and set about trying to limit the possibility of them showing up on his +8 in time...
Now circa 24 years further on looks like he did a grand job, all be it I have covered only 30k ish miles over those years, it is no longer a potential Concours winner, as My good lady was an adventurous sort, and had us finding all sorts of rough back roads while touring and creating wonderful Morgan memories...(-: Sad to type she is no longer with us, but glad to say I can still greatly enjoy the old Mog..(-:
Touch up paint was ever part of the touring tool kit, I remember well suggesting to my good lady that it might be a good idea for her to give up one of her many, many, bottles of nail varnish she had, for me to create as a touch up kit for the Mog. Being very kind hearted she rummaged through them to find a more outrageous shade, which I washed out the bottle and brush with thinners and poured in some of Cabernet from the tin of paint Kevin had also given me at the time of purchase...
On my +8 there is a round cover held by one fixing screw, when swivelled out of position provides approximate access to the gearbox filler plug.. In Morgan tradition the hole is not directly in line with the filler plug...(-:
My 2012 vehicle had more cash spent on it in the first 3 months of ownership than I have spent on the Mog during my entire custodianship of it.....and like many modern sports car contemporaries has a myriad of digital sensors actuators, and nodes, all of which have potential to make motoring a far more expensive pastime than it is ever likely to be on my old Mog... I suspect modern motorists driving digitally dependant machines are also potentially dependant on the mobile phone network, and flat back pick up trucks, even for something as simple as a damaged tyre, taking how much time to resolve while sitting feeling vulnerable at the side of the road.... Hmm..?
Yup the old Mog lack of digitec ever provided a reasonable level of comfort built on self reliance while touring, which is just not possible for me these days with more modern vehicles... It is just that which it is...?
Again, sorry for messing up your Mog modifications thread Dave, but this in TM and one has to go with the flow...? (-:
